This year, we decided not only to go to Carnival (which personally wasn’t all that great), but more so to partake in J’ourvet Sunday (which was AMAZING). J’ourvet (pronounced Jour-vey) is a street party during carnival in the eastern Caribbean regions where they celebrate day-break (therefore starting way before dawn and going well into the day). I found out about this whilst on set last week chatting to a lady from Grenada, who told me about this street party that normally happens between 3am – 5am in Grenada where they smear themselves with oil, mud or paint. Participants are known as “Jab Jabs” – click on the words to find out more about the term Jab Jab which originates back to the French word for “devil” or this case “devil devil”. It’s all rather interesting and extremely eye opening to those who know nothing about Caribbean culture (like me). Of most of the Caribbean islands, Barbados is the only one that apparently doesn’t celebrate J’ouvert Sunday but instead Foreday Monday.
So on Sunday morning we got up at 5am, put on our oldest clothing and headed down to Kensal Road to take part in the J’ourvet Celebration. We were met by people dressed in overalls, holding Nerf guns, pockets of paint, eye goggles and shower caps. It was in this moment that we realised that we were ‘over dressed’, and more so, unprepared for what was about to happen. We didn’t have paint, flour, oil or any of those things, we had a cap, a hoodie, old clothes and a camera covered in cling film ready to take some snaps. To my surprise those who weren’t wearing overalls were either wearing next to nothing, or dressed up to the nines. ie. As priests or domestic workers (who then dusted down cars as they passed by and they pulled on their vacuum cleaner props). So actually, we weren’t overdressed at all. Yay!
The paint hasn’t come off any of our clothes, I passed my cap onto my girlfriend to protect her hair whilst I pulled my t-shirt hoodie up but still managed to get pink paint in my hair – which is still there 🙁
But, all in all, what a fantastic way to spend a Sunday Morning. Next year we’ll be ready; overalls, paint and the biggest Nerf guns ever!!
